Methinks you are missing the point @boodleoops @OpheliaBenson Sure women do gestation & labour, but they are only one part of conception.
Very classic, you must admit. A man solemnly telling two adult women that women don’t conceive all by themselves. You don’t say!
Also classic in that it was out of nowhere, i.e. not part of an ongoing conversation but a cold-reply to a tweet. Also classic in that in fact we hadn’t missed the point at all, we were addressing the point.
For refreshment, have Christiane Amanpour on sexism in the coverage of Clinton:

Not exactly on topic, but I have noticed a tendency for the word “Methinks” to be a lead-in to bullshit.
(Cackles…)
I’m confused. Where does the stork figure into this?
clamboy – heh – you’re not alone. A lot of people said the same thing yesterday when I posted the gem on Facebook.
It’s probably related to that thing a lot of Internet mansplainers do of trying to sound like Samuel Johnson or similar. Lots of pompous qualifying phrases and circumlocutions. “Steersman” is the purest example I know of.
He’s also using the wrong word. Gestation and labor are NOT part of conception. Gestation and labor are parts of pregnancy. Conception is what can lead up to pregnancy; a necessary but insufficient condition to get there. Implantation is what changes a conception into a pregnancy. Bloody idiot that man is.
One thing that is missed in all this “men contribute to conception” is that men do not face a huge risk. Women turn over nine months of their life, and risk their health to carry a child to term. Men can do their part in a few minutes, with no risk to life or limb (and please, do not explain to me about STDs. I know about STDs. I am a biologist. I am talking about standard, non-STD conception, in which the woman bears the entirety of the physical risk). I’m sick of men wanting us to applaud and cheer their contribution as being somehow the equivalent of a nine month commitment, complete with physical changes.
“Patronising? Moi?”
Hahahaha!
Oh, good lord n’ butter, Steersman. My pomposity shows itself in the use of the term “sine qua non,” which I will happily apply to that poster, whose avatar should be the word “Actually”.
@4: I think Mansplaining Man is saying that women are only part of conception, not that gestation and pregnancy are only part of conception.
