No silver lining to rape
Via Planned Parenthood Advocates in Missouri:
Today, the Missouri House passed HJR 98, a “personhood” bill that would criminalize abortion in all circumstances (as well as ban common forms of birth control and infertility treatment). Rep. Hubrecht opposed an exception for rape, stating that pregnancy can be a “silver lining” for a rape victim.
Rape is a violent crime. There is no silver lining. Ever.
It never occurs to people that a woman might have other plans for her life than devoting her energy to raising the child of her rapist. Or for that matter, may not want a child at all.
To me, a child would be the exact opposite of a silver lining. It would be just another black cloud.
“Rep. Hubrecht opposed an exception for rape, stating that pregnancy can be a “silver lining” for a rape victim.”
I take it she is speaking from firsthand experience. Otherwise, she is just a rationalising God-botherer. Presumably anyway.
She can die in a fucking fire…
Argh. Please no invocations of violent painful deaths, however terrible you think the people are.
This is clearly idiotic logic – any woman who would be inclined to view her rapists baby as the silver lining to the defilement and violent violation of her body, is hardly going to abort the child, so it would be unnecessary to ban those women for using a service they would never seek.
Just another day where I wake up and feel ashamed to belong to my own species.
Well I’m a bad person… I would hope that good people don’t express similar sentiments.
I have two children. It’s hard enough when you’ve planned and prepared for it. The idea that pregnancy could be positive thing when it is out of the blue and started in a traumatic event is ludicrous.
Yes and that lining goes from merely “silver” to solid gold if the kid’s a boy and happens to the spitting image of the knuckle-dragger who brutally raped you.
What a fucking blessing
Elsa @5 nailed it. Yes, there are women who take this view. No, Planned Parenthood isn’t hunting them down and forcing abortions on them.
iknklast@1: Don’t forget, even a healthy pregnancy has a greater wear-and-tear on the mother’s physical health than a prompt abortion. So even if they respond that she doesn’t have to raise the baby (because adoption always works because of course it’s only rape if it happens to a middle-class white woman whose child would be at a premium in the adoption market), they are still suggesting that it’s a ‘silver lining’ for a woman to suffer a literal second injury.
Freemage – I actually could never forget that – having been through both a birth and an abortion, I am well aware which one was harder to recover from. I don’t buy that don’t have to raise the baby crap, either, for some of the reasons you just cited, and others besides. This garbage being spewed by the Representative is just anti-woman. And the argument so many make that women can’t be anti-woman is just wrong. A lot of women buy in to the notion that women are less capable of making their own decisions, and need to have men tell them what to do (my mother was one of those; it warped my upbringing).
