known Johnny Depp for years and through several relationships. He’s the sweetest, kindest, gentlest man that I’ve ever known. Just saying.Lawrence M. Krauss @LKrauss1

Just saying.
It’s well known that abusers are careful to tell all their friends when they’ve been abusive. Right?
Yes, and also that they behave exactly the same way with their male friends as they do with their women.
This tears it for me, regarding Krauss. I’ve long found him annoying, and now he’s defending a man who assaulted a woman. This is not how we bring about meaningful change in society, Lawrence.
There is a tradition in journamalism to go round to friends and neighbors of the accused, be they batterers or serial killers, to get them on the record proclaiming that the person in question never serial killed or battered them so the allegations cannot possibly be true. They are considered character witnesses, I suppose. Both the religious and the entertainment industry are full of them, and so is every neighborhood of every perp ever busted.
His defense of his good pal Jeffrey Epstein tore it for me, years ago.*
Remember when Epstein pled guilty after he was caught flying in underage girls–as young as 14, iirc–and passing them around among his friends? Krauss defended him.
According to a pending lawsuit, Epstein also targeted local, “troubled” high school girls.
(And now he’s accused of massive swindling.

Maybe Krauss should just admit he has lousy friends. At the very least
* Then I found out about the time he grabbed–and terrified–someone I know when they were alone. Then there’s the story about Krauss’s hostile and childish behavior toward a woman who declined his propositions while they were stuck on a cruise ship together. OK, that last one’s hearsay.
OK, my post was confusing. Typing while pissed off will have that effect.
The grabber and harrasser was Krauss himself, not Epstein.
Oh, crap, I totally forgot about that, Lady Mondegreen. You’re right. Jesus, Krauss is such an ass.
Don’t forget that Depp was going to be the headline act at the Reason Rally, so there’s a touch of PR there as well as Krauss being a jerk.
This testimony from friends thing is so fucking stupid. My dad was charming, cool, handsome, loved by everyone. And at home he turned all of that off, terrorized us, mentally and physically abused us, and switched the charm right back on the moment he walked out the door or someone from outside walked in. That’s how they do it.
It is one of those issues that leaves me feeling tired.
He doesn’t have a history of violence, his friends and ex say it doesn’t sound like him and…
Isn’t that kind of always the story? And frankly given how long Cosby got away with being a rapist, I’m not entirely sure He hasn’t got a history of…” means jack squat.
Two ‘things.’
1. The fact that abusers hide their true faces, from their prospective victims AND from most potential witnesses.
2. ALCOHOL.
That said, the default refusal to acknowledge reasonable accusations, the projection of (mostly) false solidarity with the accused instead of the accuser… At least one hopes the solidarity is false.
Seriously, were I ever to wind up in the celebrity news in whichever ‘abusive jerk’ fashion, I think I’d want to put out a statement: please don’t do the standard order ‘but he seems so nice’ thing. It’s just so _done_…
(Also, Krauss? Don’t ‘help’. Thanks awfully. This is all I need. Perhaps Cosby could also say a few kind words? I mean, wow, _that’s_ the kind of character reference defence lawyers dream of bringing in, I just can’t tell you…)
(/Depp to his lawyers, right now: ‘Soooo… I _can’t_ sue people for being supportive? This seems like a weakness of our system…’)
justinr @ 8 – ohhhhhhhh – I had totally forgotten that Depp was going to be the headline act at the Reason Rally. God damn it. I DO WISH organized atheism could manage to disentangle itself from the Bro faction.
