What “matter” are you talking about, exactly?
For the sake of completeness of information –
Goldsmiths Students Union has a brief statement…a brief, nasty, insinuating, hateful statement.
Maryam Namazie Talk – Holding Statement
Emil Allard
This matter is currently under investigation and we are not in a position to comment further. Goldsmiths SU are aware of a video that has been posted online without consent of the attending students, we have contacted the speaker and requested that this video [be] removed.Any further statement will be posted in the news section of this website.
See what they did there? They made it appear as if Maryam or ASH or both did something wrong, and as if no one else did.
They also, probably without fully realizing it, admitted to trying to hide the record of how the (all male) bullies in the front row of Maryam’s talk carried on.
Is it even a thing, these days, to attend a public talk and assume it won’t be posted online without your consent? I’ve attended hundreds of public talks that were recorded and subsequently either posted online or sold as CDs, and I don’t recall anyone asking my permission.
I mean, of course I realize the SU is full of shit, they just want to protect ISOC from merited criticism, but do they even have a rules-lawyery leg to stand on here?
I don’t think they do have a leg to stand on with that. I know that generally speaking, anything you can film from a publicly accessible space is fair game except for a very few exceptions, and a university lecture hall is almost certainly not one of those exceptions. The only way I can imagine there may be something to the complaint is if the video is used for commercial purposes – generally if you intend to use a shot with recognizable people in it for commercial purposes you need them to sign a model consent form. I’m speaking of what I understand as a semi-pro photographer but I’m not an expert in the law regarding this, so if someone knows better, please chime in.
It’s clear to me that they just said that as a way of deflecting the conversation.
Yeah…university lectures were being recorded long before youtube was a thing. They are doubling down on the stupid and embarrassing.
It is so common, that I have just assumed that the recording was made- and filmed the entire talk – because someone was there to film the talk( and not the harassment). Is there any reason to believe that is not the case?
As I understand from my school, there is a certain implicit agreement to use pictures/film of students in student functions, student events, or classes. I don’t know if that applies in the UK, though; and IANAL, so take it for what it’s worth.
Consent, huh? They actually used the word consent. Un-fucking-believable. Except it’s not, which is even more depressing. The gall of these fucks.
So they are still protecting the Islamist bully men instead of the one woman who was being bullied. Well color me surprised! /s
Punching down has become a national sport, with women exclusively the target. Most women enter the arena of debates against religion, sexism, prostitution of women, and gender with tape over our mouths and hands tied behind our backs, and then are later thrown out of the ring black and blue….. after which we’re told to stop whining, as we had the advantage all along.
