A gentle tactful loving reminder
Use the formatting tools at the top of the comment box, willya! Half of you are typing in html, after Josh went to all the trouble of giving us tools, and you’re doing the wrong ones so they’re showing up and it looks stupid and bad. Whatsa matta wichoo?
I don’t mean it; you know I love you; but pull yourselves together.
(No I know, it’s not really half. It’s just a few. But we don’t want to embarrass The Few, so let’s say it’s half.)
Sorry, mom.
My sister made me do it.
What day is today?
I do especially like the “Subscribe without commenting”. Every blog should add that.
Bullet items are not working.

This is a test, this is only a test. No bullets were harmed in performing this test.
Lets try ordered lists:
List 1
List 2
List 3
After list.
Thank you for not identifying me, by name, as the offender here.
But here’s the thing. Using Safari 4.0.3 under OS X 10.5.8, the formatting tools at the top of the comment box DO NOT WORK. Trust me, I tried.
Henceforth, I promise to use nothing but plain text.
Huh. Ordered and unordered lists are indeed broken. I’ll check out the editor features under Safari on 10.5, too–I think I have that combination around here somewhere. Sorry about that!
Maybe I can add a way to disable the fancy editor entirely as a user preference, for people who prefer the old way or for whom it’s just broken.
Is there any reason why typing in HTML doesn’t work? I thought the purpose of the tools was to insert HTML for those who don’t know it. I am ignorant of the inner workings of these tools, but it seems that they are actively stripping out all typed HTML commands (i.e., forcing them to be read as ordinary text rather than HTML). From my untutored point of view, it would seem to be easier to allow both forms of input.
If you do want to use html, you should be able to do so by clicking on the “HTML” button at the left side of the formatting bar, above the text entry field. That should open a new window in which you can type without the editor marking it up as WYSIWYG–that is, converting < to < and so forth.
Ok, I'm testing a different fancy editor. I still want to find a way to revert back to the non-fancy editor, but maybe this one will help a bit.
Let's try bold, italic,
strikethrough. So far, so good. It doesn't appear to have any accesskeys, which might be a problem.
And now I'm out of the blockquote.
Ugh, well. Clearly I need to do something about the styling of lists. But at least they're coming through now. I'll try it with safari and the iphone simulator now.
Looks like the iphone is still using the regular non-fancy editor, good. I’ll have to try to remember how I did that, and see if I can apply it to regular browsers as a selectable option.
Nope, that one had other problems. Namely, it broke the editor used for making new posts. Surely someone else must have solved this problem before, without resorting to third-party hosted comments like haloscan or disqus. Grr.
Ok, the first fancy editor is back, but with improvements which will hopefully fix the problems with Safari, at least.
I’m still not sure what’s up with lists. Do they work yet?
Ok, I think I’ve got it now. You should be able to switch back and forth between the visual and html editor styles using the buttons just above the comment entry box.
NB: When you are in visual mode–that is, when you can see the formatting such as bold and italics as you write–any html you write will not work properly. For example, here’s a link that will not be clickable, because I’m writing it in Visual mode: <a href=”http://www.google.com/”>Google</a>.
In order to use html, you’ll need to switch into the html editor by clicking on the HTML button above. I’ll do that now…
And now if I type exactly the same html, it should work correctly: Google
Here’s a test of html mode without using any markup at all. Does it still handle double-newlines as paragraphs and single-newlines as breaks?
This should be a new line.
And this should be a new paragraph.
Yup, ok. That’s as good as I’m going to make it tonight–after 1:30, I can expect the quality of my thinking to decline rapidly. One note: if you’re writing a comment in html mode, using double-newlines in place of <p></p> tags, switching back to visual mode will lose all your paragraph breaks. So either stick with html mode, or use <p></p> to wrap your pragraphs.
Oh, and please let me know if it’s still not working for you in Safari, kenneth.pidcock. I wasn’t actually able to reproduce your problem on Cam’s 10.5.8 system with Safari 4.0.5 (I think that was the version), but I did find a note in the editor’s documentation about potential problems with Safari and how to fix them. I’ve done what the instructions said, but since I couldn’t make the problem appear, I don’t know if it’s gone away.
I’m truly sorry to have caused a fuss. It’s just that, on an earlier comment, I left a bunch of HTML and, later, it appeared formatted, so I figured that would keep happening.
And I am such an idiot. When I said that the buttons didn’t work, I meant that code didn’t show up in the box. I was thinking of another site (Guardian?) where, if you hit I, <i></i> shows up in the box, and you type into it. When that didn’t happen, I didn’t even try typing!
Consider me virtually smacked up the head.

No fancy editor here
Oh. It is a few. I thought it was just me.
Sorry.
Ahh, the HTC Desire. Such an apt name. *sigh*
Gosh, please don’t stay up all night doing this stuff Josh! We’ve already got undreamed-of luxury as it is. I mean far be it from me to tell you what to do, and if this is your twisted idea of a fun way to prepare for a good night’s sleep, go right ahead, but…well you get the idea.
Heh. It wasn’t my intention, it just sort of worked out that way. “Oh, I think I see what’s happening. Five more minutes should fix it…” Repeat until tired.
Oh yes – what I do every day, pretty much. Just read this one more article – just write this one more post – just one last comment –
We all do that. But some of us call it working…
Oh well I call it working too – I never meant to imply that I don’t call it working. It’s pro bono work of course, but it’s certainly working…
Good tools, thanks for providing them. That cooool tiny butterfly on the browser tab would look great attached to the Favourites entry too!
I used to work pro bonio, but then I stopped thinking I was a dog… Arf!
This is just a test to make sure that paragraphs/newlines are working the way I think they’re supposed to.
I notice a bunch of comments with newlines but no paragraph breaks, and I’m wondering how they’re getting in.
