The Vatican lives up to itself
Good old Vatican – it makes sure we won’t relax our guard and start thinking they’re a nice bunch of fellas there. It makes sure to keep reminding us that no, they’re a nasty bigoted punitive set of dogmatists who insist on their obligation to mistreat people for no good reason.
The Vatican has said it opposes a European Union proposal for a United Nations declaration formally condemning discrimination against homosexuals, which it claims would “de-criminalise” same sex unions.
So apparently it thinks same sex unions are and should remain crimes. That’s nice. Of course, if priests fiddle with children, that should be protected and kept secret, but if gay adults want to pair off, oh my no, that must be called a crime. No poxy secular EU is going to mess around with that.
which it claims would “de-criminalise” same sex unions
What tendentious twaddle. Same sex unions (sic to taste) are not criminal. But of course the logical response of “no it doesn’t” implies precisely that.
I fear for the EU. I want a united Europe, just not this united Europe.
What a tribe of hypocrites in embroidered gowns and gold lamé hats. Here’s a question – what part of the UN listens to the Vatican’s silly pronouncements? what parts of the EU listen?
I’m serious. The papa and cardinals et al. are dangerous disgusting power-mad gas lying bags, no doubt about it, and I think they should shut the hell up. And I know plenty of individual US and Mexican Catholics who take the silly pronouncements seriously. Also of course many who chuckle indulgently about Vatican nonsense pronouncements but still live under the weight of bad superstitions, thanks to la Iglesia. But do any nations take them seriously enough to do what they say? In short does it matter that they have stamped their little booted feet and announced their ignorant opposition?
Plus, I forgot to say, the “return of god??” Jesus H. Christ. . . what pomposity. What marketing.
And, as OB says, “Gee thanks. . . we really needed religion to come back. . . not enough of it around in the public discourse. I really missed it. Nous vous remercions pour vos services. . .
Makes me want to cough up a kidney.
“What parts of the EU listen?”
Claire, I recommend the superb National Secular Society of Great Britain – see “Concordat Watch” which describes country by country the all too temporal ambitions of the Vatican. It’s well worth subscribing to their weekly e-newsletter or even becomming a member, or associate member if you’re outside the UK.
