How constitutions differ
Bangladesh began sliding slowly towards Islamism following the assassination of Rahman in 1975. In 1977, references to secularism were deleted from the constitution and the phrase “Bismillah-Ar-Rahiman-Ar Rahim” (“In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful”) was inserted. Five years later, General Ershad…introduced the Eighth Amendment, making Islam the state religion. The constitution now states that “absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah shall be the basis of all actions.”
Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful, who (according to them) wants men to treat women like dirt, and treacherous disobedient dirt at that.
I was on a bus yesterday that had an ad inside with that saying on it, along with an injunction to ‘Learn More About Islam.’ It’s a ridiculous saying – which is what makes it so irritating to see. The Beneficient, the Merciful, when actual life for most Muslims around the world is so shitty, and getting so much shittier, largely thanks to people who want to ratify all their bullying rules and restrictions with ‘In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful.’ If Allah is so beneficent and merciful, why are the rules and restrictions so harsh and cruel?
Ridiculous being ordered to have absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah when the human interpreters are so untrustworthy.
Did you know that in reverse this goes: Mihar Ra-Namihar-Ra-Hallimsib?
Now, thAt makes perfect sense to me!
I am sure gates to treasuries will open somewhere if you recite it out loud.
If not, it would make a great line in a movie on ancient Egypt. Go Russell Crow go!
Noteworthy nonsense be praised!
Learn more about islam? I learned all I needed to know from 9/11 and 7/7.
I don’t know the context of the advert, but suggesting that one should learn more about anything seems fair enough.
For all I know it could be an admonition to those who make life so shitty to consider the beneficial and merciful aspects of their religion.
Or it could be that learning leads to questioning. Whether or not that was the intent.
Richard,
I think the technical term for that is ‘Know Nothing’. Islam does not equal terrorism. It’s top of my list of pernicious religions, but if ‘9/11 and 7/7’ is all you need to know about Islam, then is it all you need to know about moslems?
Don, hmmmm. Well the context of the ad is conveyed (I think) by that slogan – it seems to mean ‘learn more about Islam so that you will understand that Allah is beneficent and merciful.’ But the Allah of Islam is not beneficent and merciful.
But on the other hand, Richard, of course (as Don says), it’s impossible to learn all one needs to know from 9/11 and 7/7. That’s a ridiculous oversimplification.
Yes, Richard, a ridiculous oversimplification. But taking in context of an informal comment, its a passable shorthand for something like:
“I know most Muslims everywhere are people like me who want to live in peace with the world, but their religion is the ideology they lived out to repeatedly commit mass murder of innocent civilians. Why should I suck up to their sensibilities, or those who might affect to be offended at this bald comment, by caring enough to learn the details of that religion?”
Don if islam does not equate to terrorism why are moslems all over the world going off like fire crackers?
It may be over simplistic O.B but untill I see several thousand moslems at not in my name demonstrations I think it is a fair judgement. The only time I have seen moslems demonstrating in large number it has been to protest cartoons or teddy bears.
Again, Richard, that’s a different claim.
I’m so sick of this.
