Another bridge built
Another bishop heard from.
The Rt Rev Patrick O’Donoghue, Bishop of Lancaster, told MPs that books critical of the Catholic faith should be banned from school libraries…Fiona McTaggart, the Labour MP for Slough, said she was extremely concerned that Catholic sixth-formers would be denied access to great works of fiction as well as non-fiction if the bishop’s ban were implemented…But Bishop O’Donoghue defended his stance. “I think there has to be a vetting of material given the age range of children in schools,” he said. “There is certain material that you do not put in front of them.”
Such as for instance books critical of the Catholic ‘faith.’ You don’t put those in front of children in schools; God no; in front of them you put books uncritical of the Catholic ‘faith.’ Because why? Because you want them to be indoctrinated in the Catholic ‘faith,’ that’s why. You want schools to be an arm of The Church, not educational institutions where people learn to think critically.
“Roman Catholic bishop has likened books which criticise the teachings of the Church to works that deny the Holocaust took place.”
So all ye Roman Catholic deniers on B&W, are basically, in the eyes of Bishop O’ Donoghue, kindred spirits (in that respect)of David Irving.
This creeping post-9/11 public, political, intellectual and media tolerance for the metaphysical is just giving some theists enough rope.
When the pendulum swings back the other way, some of these actions and statements are going to be the PR equivalent of a bad tattoo. Not, I suppose, that that will bother Bishop O’ Donoghue.
“books critical of the Catholic faith should be banned from school libraries”
So that would include the Thirty Nine Articles of the Anglican faith then. Can’t see ‘Obscurity’ Williams going for that.
Hmm, the bishop of Lancaster v the archbishop of Canterbury. But which will prevail. there’s only one way to find out. Fiiiighhht!!!!
@ G. Tingey
Wow. Yes, that had not occurred to me. Although describing such tattoos as merely ‘bad’, I suppose, would be a case of gross understatement.
“Schools and colleges must not support charities or groups that promote or fund anti-life policies, such as Red Nose Day and Amnesty International, which now advocates abortion.”
Must not. Got that?
Amnesty International advocates abortion? What, just generally? They just think abortion is a great idea?
Another own goal by floundering prelates. Keep ’em coming, boys.
Heh, “anti-life” policies.
Given that overpopulation is going to be the single biggest challenge that the human race faces in the coming decades, IMO groups and individuals advocating the prohibition of abortion are going to find their cherished belief becoming regarded as a major threat to our very survival as a species.
