Global Pincushion
Of course, it’s not just London. It’s never just London – or anywhere else.
It’s a suicide bombing in Iraq which killed more than twenty people, along with more bombings in Mosul and Kirkuk. It’s six Afghan policemen beheaded by suspected Taliban guerillas. It’s at least twenty people injured by a bomb in a litter bin in a tourist resort in Turkey. And this month is the tenth anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre when eight thousand Bosnian Muslims were killed and dumped in mass graves.
All part of the routine.
Good quote
OB – Srebrenica will eternally shame us North Europeans. We created Tudjman and Milosovich, created the conditions they could thrive under, and then wrung our pathetic hands until the US led Nato in. The UN had been worse than useless. I get very pissed off when people casually accuse the US of being perpetual war-mongerers. It’s just too simplistic. It’s an awkward fact for some but wthout Bill Clinton’s decision to deploy the USAF and US Navy, there would easily have been several more similarly depraved acts of genocide in the Balkans, while crocodile tears wrere wept in Bonn, London and Paris.
We’re a big cushion and the pins are small. Screw the focus ring open a little and look at the 20th century, all the delusional nut-cases that attempted to force their views on the world, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pot. Do the math quickly – 100 million dead; return to the 21st century and compare. Not bad. We’re still a little fuzzy in our thinking: the term “Islamic terrorist” is a contradiction; “Islamicist terrorist” is too subtle to be useful. Let’s settle on “terrorist” and get on with the job.
