A Thought from Susan Haack
Thought for the day. From Chapter 10 of Susan Haack’s Defending Science, ‘Point of Honor’:
‘In The Mind of God, Paul Davies, also a physicist, but a believer (and winner of the million-dollar Templeton Prize “for progress in religion”) concludes that “belief in God is largely a matter of taste, to be judged by its explanatory value rather than logical compulsion. Personally I feel more comfortable with a deeper level of explanation than the laws of physics. Whether the use of ‘God’ for that deeper level is appropriate is, of course, a matter of debate.” This, from the idea that explanatoriness is just a matter of taste, through the play on “deeper,” to the insouciance about the meaning of “God,” sounds to me like – well, a million-dollar muddle.’
Religion is like going to the bathroom. If you must do it, shut the door…
Might different estimates of the explainability [or explanatoriness] of something arise from different intellectual abilities among the estimators?
Yes, “deeper” sounds vague. Makes me think of dimensions, X, Y & Z & so on.
Drugs or alcohol, their behavior begins to change, they sometimes spend big amounts of their income to support their addiction, they don’t communicate as well or as much with the people around them.Alcoholism oftentimes produces this illusion that nothing has degenerated in the life of the one affected by it. But the fact that they don’t perceive it does not mean the situation is not extremely wrong. The people in the addicted individuals’ environment should speak up. They have created intervention to make it less hard for those individuals. It is extremely good to have a lot of people performing the intervention. The person struggling with an alcohol dependency must not perceive beforehand the intervention. The intervention frequently makes the person struggling with an alcohol dependency face what his addiction does to him and everyone around. The whole point of doing an intervention is to have the dependent individual enter an alcohol rehab. That is why it’s less difficult if the people have searched for treatment centers that would fit the addicted person. Because an addicted person can be very unstable, you should be ready to send the alcoholic right away when he notices that he needs help
